A Road Trip Through Waterfall Valley - Day 3
D. Nauyaca Waterfalls
Nauyaca holds the crown as the most well known waterfall in all the region. With it’s impressive fall and lush setting, the place is mind blowing. So, after leaving San Gerardo, I drove back to San Isidro (unfortunately towns here have little or no connections between each other) and this time made my way as driving to Dominical beach. As a tip, check your fuel tank, since there are almost no gas stations until you make it to the coast. There are plenty of signs on the road to reach Nauyaca, however you still need a 4x4 to make it to the private parking to visit, since the road isn’t paved and in poor conditions.
Once there, it’s quite a walk up river to the waterfall, which will take you about 1.5 hours through a steep dirt track which almost disappears once you’re getting to the waterfall. I’d say you’d probably want to stay here for more than 3 hours, it’s really worth it. Pay the entrance down by where you parked at the Reception Desk, it’s a good choice, since they’ll ask for the ticket once you get up to the waterfall, or they’ll sell it for a higher price up. Plus, in the booth you can also buy food or have lunch in the restaurant next to their office.
E. La Ceiba Ecoadventures
Making my way back to Perez Zeledón, you can find La Ceiba, which is somewhat of a private reserve. Just 3 kilometers away from Nauyaca, this was the place to stop next. Holding 4 different waterfalls and trails to visit each one of them, the place is definitely worth a stop -leaving the main road, their Front Desk and office is under 2 kilometers away-. The trails are steep and quite muddy, so adequate hiking shoes and some strong physical condition is required to make the most of the visit. Since the place is quite big, walking all around could probably take you all day inside the park, however I just visited La Raíz, which is the first one on their trail.
This place offers some accommodation, including good camping facilities which are well kept and quite nice, plus meals and lunches are sold in their inn.
